October 1st was more than just a date on the election calendar. It marked a pivotal moment for both national politics and the next generation of civic leaders. On that day, the Vice Presidential debate between Governor Tim Walz and Senator JD Vance took center stage, but perhaps more consequential was what unfolded at Xavier University of Louisiana. KAMA
Why These Two Events Matter
The debate between Walz and Vance was crucial, shedding light on issues from healthcare to the economy, but what happened at Xavier made it clear that the real conversation happens beyond the debate stage—within the minds of young voters. These students, many attending their first election-related event, actively fact-checked the candidates’ claims and engaged in meaningful discussion about the policies that will shape their future. Their level of engagement was electrifying.
During the event, students expressed both concern and optimism. For some, the candidates’ answers revealed policies that could jeopardize their futures, especially in the areas of healthcare and social justice. Others found hope, seeing the possibility of real change that might reward their studies and aspirations. The students, dressed in their UNWEIRD™ apparel, exemplified a growing movement—one that values thoughtful conversation and mutual respect across political divides.
Young Voices, Real Impact
At the heart of the evening was KAMA’s online poll, designed to capture the priorities of young voters. The results were a powerful reminder that this election isn’t just a political exercise—it’s a personal mission for many students:
• How important is the 2024 Election to you personally? An overwhelming 84% of students said the election is very important to them.
• Why does this election matter to you? The responses were deeply personal, with students noting that this election is their first opportunity to vote. “Our life is on the line as a Black community,” said one student, while another explained, “I fear for my rights as a woman.” The gravity of this moment was clear—this is a generation that knows what’s at stake, and they refuse to be silent. They are not just participating in democracy; they are protecting their futures.
• What issues matter most to you? Students selected Social Justice (84%), Healthcare (80%), and Education (56%) as their top priorities. This focus on justice, health, and education underscores a desire for policies that don’t just maintain the status quo but create opportunities for equity and progress.
The Challenge Ahead: Civic Engagement
Alexia Perkins’ leadership at this event was a reflection of what KAMA Keep America Moving Ahead™ is all about—empowering young people to take action. And their actions go beyond debate watch parties. Xavier students are mobilizing, educating their peers, and using their voices to influence the future.
The KAMA poll showed that 96% of the students in attendance were already registered to vote, with 72% saying they plan to participate in more election-related events like town halls, rallies, and policy discussions before Election Day. But here’s a reality check—despite this enthusiasm, 68% of students feel that young voters are not being adequately represented in today’s political conversation. This disconnect between youth engagement and political attention is a challenge that must be addressed.

The Power of Dialogue and Respect
One of the most compelling aspects of this event was how the students embodied KAMA’s core values. Dressed in their UNWEIRD™ apparel, they represented the idea that differing opinions should lead to dialogue, not division. In a time when political conversations often descend into insult and outrage, these students are pushing for something better—a return to the table where respect, mutual understanding, and progress can thrive.
As one student put it, “A more prosperous future for the majority of citizens depends on a person of integrity and empathy for all being elected president.” This simple truth speaks to the power of informed, respectful discourse—a key element of KAMA’s mission to Keep America Moving Ahead.
The Future Is in Good Hands
As the night came to an end, it was clear that this was not just a one-off event. The energy in the room, the thoughtful discussions, and the commitment of students like Alexia Perkins showed that the future of civic engagement is in good hands. With 100% of attendees expressing a desire for more election-related events on campus, it’s clear that this is only the beginning.
The students of Xavier University are ready to lead, and KAMA is here to support them every step of the way. This election is about more than politics—it’s about securing the future these young leaders deserve.
